Boomershoot 2008 PreparationsPreparation for a Boomershoot goes on year around. Seldom a week goes by without at least a piece of email sent or a check on prices or consulting with someone on a new idea or working out the details on something that has to be done. Here are some of the things that went into the making of Boomershoot 2008. November 11, 2007Caleb and I installed a new inverter and winterized the water pump. More details and pictures are here. October 7, 2007Kim, Caleb, and I installed a stairway from the new water pump to the mixing area at the explosives area:
Details are here. September 8 and 9, 2007Caleb and I improved the explosives mixing area and tested the new ammonium nitrate.
More pictures and details here. August 12, 2007I put in the pump and got it working in the new "well". More details and pictures via LIVE blogging from the Boomershoot site. August 5, 2007Kim, Caleb and I put in a "well" for use at our explosives manufacturing location. It's actually just a storage tank for surface water run-off but it will be more than a 10 X increase in the water we usually have available for cleaning our equipment, first aid and fire control should that ever be a necessity.
More pictures and details here. June 30, 2007I stored 5000 pounds of fresh ammonium nitrate in the Taj and installed a different power supply for the WiFi access point Boomershoot2. More details here.
June 21, 2007In regards to 1000 yard Boomershooting--I did a few calculations with Modern Ballistics last night to see what would happen if people just overshot the proposed target area. My cousin's house is a mile away and pretty close to directly behind the proposed target area. The house is out of sight and I suspected the shots would overshoot the house and land in the fields behind his house. It turns out the answer depends on the caliber being shot:
I haven't checked with my cousin yet but I suspect the safety margins are not acceptable. It is very unlikely there be 1000 yard shooting at Boomershoot 2008. I need to find a different location before that becomes a reality. June 16 & 17, 2007Xenia and I managed to make room for the new supply of AN, I did some improvements in the electrical system at the Taj Mahal, and I tried digging a well for use when we are making the explosives. More details and pictures are here.
June 15, 2007Today I took delivery on 5000 pounds of Ammonium Nitrate. AN is the main ingredient in Boomerite. My previous supplier stopped carrying it and I obtained the last AN for sale in the county in July of 2005. It was with great relief that I found a new supplier even though I had enough for 2008 and at least part of 2009.
May 28, 2007I've been making extensive changes to the online entry website. The change in the way "cleanup" is handled required changes. And the version used for Boomershoot 2007 did not allow for easy modifications to people's entries. Inevitably people want to change positions, or add and substitute people. Previously that required a lot of manual labor. The situation is much improved and will be ready for use very soon. May 19, 2007My daughter Kim and her future mother-in-law went out to the site to help inventory materials and do some clean up after Boomershoot 2007.
I also explored the possibility of creating a 1000 yard target area.
The impact area, just this side of the trees in the distance, needs a lot of improvement but it could work.
A very limited number of shooters (maybe four or five) would be able to shoot from just to the left of the power tower in the center of the picture. The range to the tower is about 980 yards. I think moving them back to make it an even 1000 yards is possible.
